The Research School in Climate Dynamics is inviting PhD candidates to Dallas Murphy's fifth annual science writing workshop to be held June 20-24, 2016.  Dallas is a professional writer, author of nine books, fiction and nonfiction.  He conducts this workshop annually at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, the University of Hamburg, University of Miami's Rosenstiel School, as well as here in Bergen.

From Dallas:

Dear Prospective Workshop Members:

Here's a brief note on the workshop format and objectives.  Each student will be asked to submit a draft of a science paper before the workshop begins, and all the papers will be packaged and sent to all students.  In class, I will read aloud the abstract, introduction, and concluding matter of each paper, and, as a group, we will discuss each paper individually, three per day.  We'll begin by asking the straightforward question, Is the work clear?  Do we as readers know precisely what the paper is about and what new research it presents?

Working together, I can guarantee that we can improve each paper, assuming it needs improving, but that is not the final objective of the workshop.  We'll use the papers as a starting point from which to step back and address the writing process itself, offering principles that can be applied to the composition of the next paper and the next.  I call this "learning to think like a writer."

The week is intensive but rewarding.  We can accept a maximum of twelve students.  Working on three papers per day leaves Friday open for rewrites, the objective of which is not to rewrite the entire paper, but to address a particular section with the conscious purpose of improving clarity-and to get used to the idea that writing is, in fact, rewriting.

I look forward to meeting you in June, Dallas
