PhD course: Polar Marine Sedimentary Environments

Basic and Advanced course in polar marine geology, paleoceanography and paleoclimatology (5 ECTS)

This course will cover research topics from Arctic environments; fjords to deep sea.  In addition, the students will be introduced to interdisciplinary marine geological methods. The topics will include marine sedimentary processes and products of different depositional environments, paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic evolution. Case stories and material will be selected from ongoing research covering both Arctic modern environments and paleo-environments from the last glacial - interglacial cycle.

The course will be held at Department of Geology, University of Tromsø.  Deadline for registration is April 1, 2011.

Course outline

Week one: Lectures Thursday - Friday, 9:15 - 12:00 and 13:15 - 16:00 (week 27, 7 - 8/7)

Week two: Lectures Monday - Wednesday, 9:15 - 12:00 and 13:15 - 16:00 (week 28, 11 - 13/7)

 

Exam

Individual report after the course (10-15 pages) on a pre-defined topic from with pass/fail grading. The deadline for the report is September 15.
