Creating Scientific Pod Casts

02.07.2014 - 04.07.2014

As young and early career scientists, we should all be aware of the importance of improving our communication skills. In this technology-fuelled age, there are many different media we can use to communicate science, beyond the standard peer-reviewed article. Podcasts are an exciting and increasingly popular way to communicate scientific stories (yes that means your research!).

To learn more about the art of podcasting, Resclim, ClimateSnack and Imperial College have teamed up to organize a 3-day course, to be held at Imperial College London from July 2-4, 2014. The workshop will be led by Jack Soper, an audio producer, project manager and freelance course organizer.

Jack has a background in BBC Radio, where he has worked for different stations like the World Service and Radio 4. He has also worked in commercial radio at local stations in south west England. Last year he won a Gold Sony Radio Award in the category of Best Promotional Campaign. With all this knowledge and experience, Jack has planned a great course with a clear main objective: to give you the expertise to go away and make podcasts yourself. Each of the participants should finish the course with a completed podcast that tells the story about an element of their own research or science that interests them. We encourage participants to make podcasts that are linked to ClimateSnacks so that they can be posted simultaneously on the climatesnack.comwebsite.

Before the course starts, we will be distributing CDs which contain all the podcasts from Ari Shapiro's Ocean Gazing. In the meantime, here is a demo podcast to give you an idea of what you will be aiming for. The podcast produced by Jack, and written and read by Mathew Stiller-Reeve, with special guest star Stefan Sobolowski.

If you are a Resclim student please sign in to find the registration form below (total 6 spaces). Each applicant should write 80-100 words about a subject or topic they would like to make a podcast about. Please only sign up if you know you can attend - course registration is binding for Resclim students. The course is free for Resclim and Imperial College students. Resclim will cover travel costs for Resclim students only. Lunch 2-4 July and dinner 3 July will be catered for.
